013/ L10 villas/ arenzano
The landscape of the Pineta di Arenzano acts as the juxtaposition of the overflowing nature of the promontory and some extraordinary examples of modern architecture from the 50's and 60's. A common language is employed in the articulation of the villas but certain peculiarities make each unit unique. Large windows that frame the panoramic views, green roofs that speak to the lush nature of the context, and slender, light structures are the themesthat reappear in every villa. Stone, plaster and wood are used to identify withthe local architecture and, more generally, the Mediterranean villa typology.

The restoration and expansion of a farmhouse and barn on the terraced hillside of Cinque Terre in Liguria focuses on the recovery and emphasis of original materials and construction techniques in a contemporary perspective. The main house has its original structure and distribution intact with the incorporation of contemporary elements in substitution for the parts of the building that were not recoverable due to advanced stages of deterioration. New concrete paving unifies the spaces of the house, white plaster for the interior highlights the stone on the original bearing walls, and the new black window frames create a balanced contrast with the interiors of the house and the framing of the landscape.

The renovation of small refuge for a young Milanese entrepreneur passionate for cooking serves as an opportunity to create a fluid and continuous space bathed in shades of white. Oak parquet flooring, the only colored component, acts as the support for a series of light surfaces where the light becomes a solid material in the architectural composition and creates a pleasant environment, austere and sensual at the same time.

The renovation of the entrance and common areas of the offices of Christie's auction house in Milan focuses on attention to detail and a specific selection of materials in order to create a harmonious integration with the interior of the Renaissance building in theheart of Milan that houses it, the subject of many years of restructuring characterized by very high design quality. The objective is to add value to the space through fine details, accentuating the beauty of the building. The delicate nature of the project, composed of multiple shades of white and grey, evokes a subdued and refined image while at the same time succeeds in representing the distinctive name of the client.

"...A small restaurant created by us, where you feel affection, passion, and care, creating a reality that is ours and for everyone. I've seen this place. It's Lile, a new restaurant where I had dinner last weekend. Two bright windows, warm like home, inviting and relaxing. My first thought: I'm in the right place. Everything is there for a reason, denoting the personality and the attention of those who took care of every detail. We start with a ribollita. Healthy, sincere. To discover in the first spoonful: you taste the flavor of olive oil! First course: homemade pappardelle with ragù. Moving. Main course: maialino al vino and coniglio alle erbe, con contorno di patate con la buccia. Indulgence is on its way..."

The proposal for the new residential complex bases its foundational principle on the urban context and landscape. The compositional process of the project is defined by a morphological reading of the urban fabric and environment, understood as the sum of the factors that contribute to the perception of the project site. The building's relationship with the environment is enhanced through the volumetric layout of the building, optimizing the solar exposure of the residential units through a volumetric deformation given the orientation of the site. At an architectural scale, the project adopts a series of devices that implement continuity between the green space and architecture (green roof terraces, loggias, physical and visual permeability at the ground floor): a porous architecture infiltrated by the landscape, becoming an integral part of the lives of the inhabitants.

The project acts as a spontaneous territorial gesture that interprets the characteristics of the place, introducing itself as a hinge between the existing public space in front of the farm, Cascina Merlata, and the park. The alignment with the piazza in front of Cascina Merlata facing via Gallarate generates a public connection to the project, while in the south, a public space of access and distribution at the entrance to the masterplan opens the visual horizon to a green corridor that the two buildings face. The park crosses the intervention like a gradient, transforming into urban space upon confronting the design of the city and vice versa. The intent is to give form to a public space in conjunction with the development of the private components, resulting in a space configured with a system that combines full living, working, and recreation.

The building emerges from the horizon of the countryside of Parma as a new landmark, a gesture capable of redefining the surrounding landscape. At the base of the volume a dense garden occupies the entire perimeter of the lot and enters the interior common space ofthe building. The vertical cavity which generates the form of the building houses the energy consumption and climate regulation systems. With a focus on innovative building, the project is designed to take advantage of the climatic and environmental conditions of its context. A kaleidoscopic facade changes with the time of day and seasons of the year, just like the agricultural fields that surround it, taking advantage of environmental conditions while paying attention to energy conservation and production.

This addition to Malpensa Airport, acts as an absolute element in the context; pure geometry is presented as the only solution to a dominant complexity. The design exists as a parallelepiped of 12x12x36 meters, set on the sliding axis of the moving walkway that connects the train station to the terminals of the airport. On the exterior, circles of light and small dots of strobe lights define the volume. Laterally, two hemispheres of light and intermittent points of light are projected on two square surfaces in red clay, relating the flight activity from the sky above. The walls flanking the entrance are devoted to two projections by video artist, Grazia Toderi. The images, dedicated to the relationship between the sky and Earth, the dream of flight, light paths of airplanes at night that appear even in the most isolated zones of the planet, and the ancient representation of terrestrial and celestial globes, welcome passengers arriving and departing.

The proposal for piazza Giuseppe Verdi in La Spezia leaves fragments of memories outlined on the asphalt; the presumable routes of cars, traffic moving in both directions, bicycles and pedestrians, appropriated in long ribbons on the ground dictated by the traffic signals. This registration of movement and motion on the ground is a way to instill the tracks of the population's variety of uses of the city. The intervention essentially consists of a design of luminous strips left by cars passing in the night; the materialization of these sculptural elements is defined by a ratio of proportions between the volumes resulting in the varying heights and curvature of the lines in the Piazza. The piazza actually comes back to life, such that it conceptually retains all its transformations in volumes, positive and negative, and even carries the passage of man with it.

The residential complex of via Cenni is part of a diverse and dense urban area characterized by isolated buildings and by large mono-functional complexes. The project reinterprets the matrix of the existing farm, Torrette di Trenno, with a courtyard plan which opens the new intervention to the existing urban and social fabric with squares, meeting places, for gathering, sharing and exchange. The goal is to give shape to a large public space that fully combines living, working and recreation. New raised urban paths recallthe Milanese tenement tradition, generating common spaces for residents and distribution paths for the housing units. The architectural design doubles as a social project encouraging neighborly relations and a stronger sense of living and, therefore, the formation of the community.

Although the population on both sides of the Strait – which reaches 250,000 in Messina alone – constitutes Italy's fifth largest metropolitan area, where geographical and cultural divisions have made cooperation between the Calabrian and Sicilian shores especially difficult. The aim was to devise a new floating island to spearhead joint development in a number of areas, including tourism. Located in the middle of the Strait as a high-speed hub (for passengers and goods) serving both shores, the floating park will be a symbol of unity, a point of attraction of natural and architectural interest, as well as a source of electricity, generated by underwater turbines.

The recuperation of an industrial area from the 1930's in La Torba makes way for an intersection of the surrounding natural landscape, historical remnants of an industrial site, and neighboring attractions, the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Monastero di Torba, the ancient ruins of Castelseprio and Santa Maria foris portas. A multifunctional program attends to culture, sports, and leisure to bring a variety of functions to the site and also establishing a network for such programs in the surrounding area; incorporating the industrial culture of the area, the existing bike path, sports, outdoor and wildlife activities and education, hospitality, and welcome/information services.

The redevelopment and transformation of a building from the beginning of the 20th century into a hospitality project requires a series of reflections relative to the significance of the image of the project, the new interior layout, and the redevelopment of the energy and conditioning systems. The courtyard, which most rooms overlook, was conceived as a public space, semi-enclosed with greenery. A living façade that wraps the internal courtyard, while streetside the building is clad in a intricate work of tiles decorated with plant specimen imagery, developed with Studio Glithero of London. On the interior, a three story volume is cleared at the entrance to house the lobby, the new concrete staircase, and the connections between the public spaces to the rooms through a system of balconies, all daylit from above by a large skylight.

The restoration of a historic building in the center of Milan focuses on the recovery of the unique original features in conjunction with contemporary living exigencies. The division of the space into three penthouse apartments presents the opportunity to fully take advantage of the volume available, allowing for double height spaces that capture and frame the historic structural details of the building. Attention to detail, use of salvaged materials, and the introduction of terraces all contribute tothe rich quality of the living spaces.

The renovation of this apartment in the center of Milan concentrates on a reorganization of distribution. While maintaining the existing layout, a central spine, running the length of the apartment is introduced to clarify circulation and access to services areas including the kitchen and bathrooms. Fromthe entrance to the bedrooms, this element, composed of wood, transforms from functioning as a divider, to a piece of furniture, to a door, to a wall, and also a closet, reorganizing the space entirely. Classic materials, such as Carrara marble and walnut are employed in a contemporary language to complement the context of the intervention.
